How Much Does a Fractional CMO Cost in 2026?

Short answer: most US fractional CMOs charge $5,000 to $15,000 a month on retainer, or $200 to $400 an hour for advisory work. The price is set mainly by weekly hours and scope. In the FRAK survey of 250 fractional professionals, 40% charged $5,000 to $8,000 a month.

Fractional CMO pricing models

ModelTypical US rangeBest for
Monthly retainer$5,000 – $15,000 / monthOngoing leadership: strategy, priorities, team and vendor direction
Hourly$200 – $400 / hourShort advisory work, a second opinion, a board prep session
Day rate$1,200 – $2,500 / dayWorkshops and planning intensives
Project$8,000 – $50,000A defined deliverable: a go-to-market plan, a positioning overhaul

Ranges vary by source. Some 2026 benchmarks stretch the retainer range to $25,000 or more for multi-day weekly commitments at larger companies; others start around $3,000 for light, strategy-only engagements. The band above is where most published US benchmarks overlap.

What fractional CMOs actually charge: survey data

Benchmarks from hiring platforms tend to run higher than what practitioners report. The FRAK State of Fractional survey asked 250 fractional professionals what they charge per month:

What drives the price

  • Weekly commitment. Roughly one day a week lands at the low end of the range; two to three days a week pushes toward the top.
  • Strategy only, or strategy plus execution. An advisor who sets direction costs less than a CMO who also runs SEO, ads, and email hands-on.
  • Scope of leadership. Directing an in-house team and several agencies is a bigger job than steering one channel.
  • Track record. Operators with documented, sourced results in your kind of business charge more — and should.
  • Company complexity. A $2M founder-led retailer needs different depth than a $40M company with multiple product lines.

Fractional vs. full-time CMO: the real cost comparison

Average total compensation for a US CMO is about $293,575 a year (Built In, 2026). That's before the rest of the cost of an executive hire:

  • Benefits: 30.1% of total employer compensation costs in US private industry (Bureau of Labor Statistics, March 2026).
  • Recruiting: retained executive search typically charges 25% to 35% of first-year compensation, and searches run 90 to 120 days.
  • Commitment: a full-time hire is hard to unwind; a fractional engagement usually runs month to month.

A fractional CMO at $5,000 to $15,000 a month costs $60,000 to $180,000 a year, with no benefits, equity, or search fee — and can start in weeks instead of months.

What's usually not in the retainer

Before comparing quotes, confirm what sits outside the fee. Most retainers exclude ad spend, and many exclude specialist execution such as design, development, or video. Two quotes of $6,000 and $12,000 are often the same price once you add what the cheaper one leaves out.

Five questions to ask before you sign

  1. How many hours or days per week does the retainer cover?
  2. What will you do hands-on, and what will you direct others to do?
  3. What's included — and what will I pay for separately?
  4. Which metrics will we review monthly, and where does each number come from?
  5. What's the notice period, and what do I keep if we stop?

How Point Média prices fractional CMO work

Point Média works on a flat monthly retainer in three tiers — Starter, Growth, and Full — scaled by weekly commitment, never billed by the hour. Each tier covers marketing strategy, an SEO and AI-search (AEO/GEO) program, the content pipeline, reporting, and coordination of specialist execution. Ad spend and outsourced specialist work are budgeted separately, and I take one client per vertical. There's no minimum commitment: about six months is recommended to see results, but you can stop anytime. See what's included in each tier.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fractional CMO cost per month?

Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time CMO?

Usually by a wide margin. Average total compensation for a US CMO is about $294,000 a year before benefits, recruiting fees, and equity. A fractional CMO at $5,000 to $15,000 a month totals $60,000 to $180,000 a year.
